CalArts @ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition Supports and Showcases Emerging Artists in Dance and Film

Winning films to be screened at the 14th Annual Dance Camera West Festival at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 3.

Valencia, CA, April 9—The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance and the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and Dance Camera West are pleased to announce the winners of the second CalArts @ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition. 

Winners of the 2015 competition are:
Kynan Welsh - Marymount Manhattan College - First Place College category
Film: METEOR
Kym McDaniel - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - Second Place College category
Film: Groundswell
Hannah Kaufman - First Place High School Category
Film: Togettotheotherside
Theo Taplitz - Honorable Mention High School Category

For the competition, high school and college students were invited to submit dance media in a wide variety of categories, including screendance, short film, feature film, documentary, animation and interactive dance media. The winning college films receive a cash prize and the winning high school film receives a CalArts scholarship prize, pending acceptance to the School of Dance. 

The winning films will be screened at the 14th Annual Dance Camera West Festival on Sunday, May 3 at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) in downtown Los Angeles. Films from the CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition screen at 5:30 pm.  Tickets are $15.

Created to recognize and support talented young dancers and filmmakers, the competition benefits two categories of artists—high school students (grades 9-12) and college students. Highlighting the combined expertise of its sponsors, the competition unites Dance Camera West’s dedication to the promotion and development of the vibrant art of dance media with CalArts’ internationally acclaimed blend of technical excellence and innovative artistry.

“I am pleased that CalArts is partnering with Dance Camera West to promote state-of-the-art dance media—especially when it comes to supporting emerging artists in the fields of filmmaking and dance,” said Stephan Koplowitz, dean of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance. “The screening and competition offer great opportunities to apply CalArts' long experience with cross-disciplinary work to help and encourage young dancers and filmmakers.”

Dance Camera West (DCW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and developing the vibrant art of dance media.
