The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues its longstanding support for the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) by making a $15,000 FilmCraft grant to fund an expanded Visiting Artist Program in 2016-17, which will bring prominent filmmakers and animators to CalArts’ campus to conduct intimate, hands-on workshops for students in the School of Film/Video.
The 2016-17 Visiting Artist Program will benefit students in the four programs offered by the School of Film/Video: the Program in Film and Video, the Character Animation Program, the Experimental Animation Program and the Film Directing Program. The Academy’s grant will enable CalArts to offer more hands-on, intimate workshops with visiting artists to students across the School. The individualized attention provided by these visiting filmmakers during hands-on workshops enables students to gain an in-depth understanding of each filmmaker’s unique perspective and creative strategies, and helps students develop and refine their own distinctive artistic voices.
Visiting artists are an essential component of the student experience at CalArts, serving to broaden the debate about the latest developments in contemporary artmaking. The Visiting Artist Program in the School of Film/Video introduces students to filmmakers with diverse ranges of backgrounds, experiences, and artmaking strategies; past artists include Deborah Stratman, Roger Beebe, Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Kidlat Tahimik, and Akosua Adoma Owusu.
