Animation Facilities Update #4

Below are the latest updates on the progress of the CalArts Town Center animation space and the construction/remodeling activity on campus to repair the Character and Experimental Animation areas damaged by the overflowing cooling tower in June.

CalArts Town Center

  • Equipment and furniture has now been moved into the CalArts Town Center space. Staff members are currently working to set up printers, Wi-Fi access points, as well as Cintiqs, downshooters, and pencil test stations. We anticipate that the work will be completed in the next 7 to 10 days.

  • Once we are closer to completion of the site (toward the end of next week),
we will announce the schedule for student tours (by cohort) to visit the Town Center space.
    • During the tour, students will see the layout, equipment and workspaces as well as learn how to access the building.
    • At the end of each tour, students can sign up for the cubicle lottery, which will start with the MFA/BFA4/BFA3 year-levels, followed by the other classes in order of priority.

  • CalArts is hiring van drivers for the shuttle service and setting up the
    shuttle schedule.

  • Once open, the CalArts Town Center will be available daily from 8 am to 2 am.

A-Block Renovation Project

Back on campus, we are in the middle of the proposal and selection process for an architect that will help us re-envision our animation spaces. Once selected, the architect will facilitate a design and planning process that includes community input and feedback.

Abatement and cleanup continue in the damaged spaces on campus. As a safety reminder, please stay out of the construction areas. There is currently no access to A115/A116 (Experimental Animation) or A221 (Character Animation) due to the renovation work.

We will continue to update you on our progress. Please see the special Animation Facilities webpage [https://filmvideo.calarts.edu/facilties-updates] which houses all the reconstruction and space updates.

Thanks to our Film/Video community for their continued support and patience as we work through these challenges together. See you on campus!
