Maureen Furniss

Maureen Furniss, Ph.D. is a well-known animation historian. She is the founding editor of Animation Journal (1992-2017) and author of several books, including Art in Motion: Animation Aesthetics (John Libbey/Indiana University Press, 1998), The Animation Bible (Laurence King/Harry N. Abrams, 2008), and A New History of Animation (Thames & Hudson/WW Norton, 2016). Her dissertation, Things of the Spirit: A Study of Abstract Animation, was completed at the University of Southern California. She is a founding member of both Women in Animation and the Society for Animation Studies, of which she is past chairman of the board. She has received awards for her contributions to the field of animation from the Hollywood chapter of ASIFA, Variety magazine, and the Animafest (Zagreb) festival.
